The
Basics
Why should I join SCLA?
SCLA is the state’s premier library
association. We are a group of librarians, library staff members, and library
supporters working together to advocate for and improve library services in
South Carolina. If you’re reading this, you must care about libraries, and that
means SCLA is for you! As a member, you will benefit from continuing education,
professional development, networking, and leadership opportunities; and you
will be eligible to register for our outstanding annual conference at a reduced
rate.
How do I join?
Joining is easy! Just fill out the online membership application, and pay your dues via PayPal. Or, you can print and
mail the form along with a check to:
South
Carolina Library Association
PO
Box 1763
Cayce,
SC 29202
If
you are a student or paraprofessional interested in joining both ALA and SCLA, please
see below for information on joint membership before submitting the online application.
Why are there different membership
levels?
The schedule of dues includes different
membership levels in an effort to make SCLA membership as affordable as
possible. Please select the level that most closely applies to you.
How long does my SCLA membership
last?
Your membership is valid for one year
from the date you join.
Who can I contact for assistance with
membership questions?
Please contact SCLA Executive Secretary,
Donald Wood (803-252-1087, scla@capconsc.com) or the standing SCLA 2nd Vice President/Membership.
Joint
ALA Membership
Is there an option for joint
membership with ALA?
Yes! There are two categories of joint
membership:
·
Joint Student
Membership
Students who have never before been members of SCLA or
ALA can join both organizations for the reduced rate of $35 annually.
·
Joint Paraprofessional
Membership
Paraprofessionals (people working in libraries who do
not hold an MLS) who have never been members of SCLA or ALA can join both
organizations for the reduced rate of $65 annually.
If you plan to apply for joint
membership, please do not fill out
the general online membership application. Instead, print and fill out either
the joint student form or the joint paraprofessional form and mail it directly to ALA.
I’m a student/paraprofessional, but
I’ve been a member of SCLA/ALA before. Do I qualify for joint membership at the
reduced rate?
Only members who are new to both SCLA and ALA are eligible for the joint
membership option.
Can I continue to renew my joint
membership at the reduced rate?
Yes! If you are eligible and apply for
joint membership this year, you can continue to renew at the same reduced rate
provided you still qualify as a student or paraprofessional.
Sections
and Roundtables
Should I join a section or roundtable?
Absolutely! Joining sections or
roundtables will enhance your SCLA experience by connecting you with others in
the association who have similar interests.
Individual members can join two sections
or roundtables at no charge, and sustaining members can join four sections or
roundtables at no charge. Additional sections or roundtables can by joined for
$3 each.
I’m a new member. Which sections or
roundtables should I join?
Welcome to SCLA! Our New Members
Roundtable is a great place for you to start.
I’m applying for membership as a
retired librarian (or full-time student). Can I join a section or roundtable?
While retired librarian and full-time
student memberships don’t include section or roundtable membership, you’re
encouraged to join as many as you’d like by paying the section/roundtable fee
of $3 each.
How can I join Sections or
Roundtables if I’ve registered as an SCLA/ALA joint member?
Joint student members automatically
receive membership in the SCLA New Members Round Table. Joint members are
encouraged to join additional sections and roundtables. Please contact SCLA
Executive Secretary, Donald Wood (803-252-1087, scla@capconsc.com) to register for as many as you’d like by paying the
section/roundtable fee of $3 each.
I’m interested in serving as a
section/roundtable officer. How can I get involved?
To learn more about leadership
opportunities, contact the section/roundtable chair. Contact information can be
found at www.scla.org.
Institutional Memberships
What is an institutional membership?
Libraries and other institutions can
join SCLA at the rate of $100 annually. Institutional memberships include one
free conference registration for a staff member who is also an individual member
of SCLA.
Does an institutional membership
entitle all staff members to register for the conference at the reduced rate?
One staff member who is also an
individual member of SCLA will receive free conference registration. Additional
staff members would need to maintain their own individual memberships in order
to be eligible for the reduced conference registration rate and to receive any
other member benefits throughout the year.
